On the 78th episode of the Game Central Podcast, we discuss the games we’ve been playing, the new Aliens vs. Predator, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and the StarCraft 2 beta. In our feature discussions, we question if sequels should be wholly changed with each iteration, and the announcement of Civilization V.

  1. I liked that Mass Effect 2 changed a lot going from the first to the second game. I enjoyed that BioWare was not afraid to make changes that I felt generally improved the game. It was a nice and refreshing change of pace.

  2. Yeah, most sequels I can think of are in fact incremental improvements to the originals. And I think that’s the best way to go about making good sequels, fleshing out the setting, improving the plot, deepening mechanics, and giving the player more options.

The caveat with this is if you do not address whatever shortcomings were present in the original, they will be even more glaringly obvious in the sequel.
